THE DEBATE IS ON!

Space opera is a sub-genre of science fiction literature that emphasizes space warfare, melodramatic adventure, interplanetary battles, chivalric romance, and risk-taking. Set mainly or entirely in outer space, it usually involves conflict between opponents possessing advanced abilities, futuristic weapons, and other sophisticated technology. The term has no relation to music, but is instead a play on the terms “soap opera” and “horse opera”, the latter of which was coined during the 1930s to indicate clichéd and formulaic Western movies.

This week we want your votes and submissions to determine which Space Opera book series deserve to be considered best of all time.

Next week we’ll move the top 10 to a final round to determine their rankings from 10 to 1.

Weigh in on the poll below (feel free to add your own suggestions) and then duke it out in the comments!

  1. The best space opera is the “Helmsman” series by Bill Baldwin. I still re-read it…..

  2. You didn’t list the Liad universe, written by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller!

  3. The first Dune book was fantastic. IMO they fell off drastically after that. As for the Honorverse that is a great series. About halfway through I started buying hard back. Niven and Pournelle are a pair of the best writers around and their Mote series in excellent. Dan Simmons Hyperion series is full of surprises that keep the reader interested. Daniel Arenson got no votes, yet, which I find surprising for this series. If you haven’t read it, it is definitely worth checking out. As for the rest, I like Lois Bujold but I don’t think this is one of the best series. I only voted for my 2 favorites from this list. If I should have voted for more, I didn’t think so.

  4. Why isn’t DOCTOR WHO listed? or the Imperial Radch series, starting with ANCILLARY JUSTICE by Ann Leckie? I can’t seem to add them, so would someone please do so for me, please?

  5. You definitely need to add the Class 5 trilogy by Michelle Diener to the list. It is incredible, especially in audiobook format. The first book is “Dark Horse”.

  6. So many series I enjoy and re read were listed… I love the Hitchhikers Guide, Liaden and Honorverse series, as well as Imperial Radch (although some are more Space Opera than others…). Class 5 series are great fun. Everyone has their own definition of Space Opera, but I decided to go with Vorkosigan series as it has more of the ticks for Space Opera for me. Honor Harrington was up there for me and several of Lindsay Buroker’s series (eg the cyborg one) would have caused me even more emotional pain to choose between. Argh and the Tanya Huff Valor one’s, and… and…

  7. Too many even for me to pick – I already added one and feel like I could add another 5 that aren’t mentioned. Need to restrict the ‘universe’ some – in the last 10 years? Currently being written, classics etc.
